About the Course
Energy Management in Domestic Buildings is a FETAC Level 5 course (module 1827). A module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain an NCVA (National Council for Vocational Awards) award.
Objective of the Course
The module is designed to assist candidates to develop the skills required to:
Understand the importance of effective energy consumption.
Give advice on the appropriate and efficient use of energy.
Course Structure
This Module comprises 4 units:
Unit 1 - Fuel Poverty
Unit 2 - Building Fabric & Legislation
Unit 3 - Domestic heating systems, Appliances and Hot Water Systems
Unit 4 - Energy Consumption, Bills, Tariffs & Fuel Debt
The course is delivered in several stages. Firstly, the course material is presented over 3 days. The candidates are then provided with assignments based on each of the 4 modules to be completed within an agreed timeframe, typically 3 weeks. Thirdly, the candidates are required to demonstrate the skills they have learned during site visits under the guidance of an observer. Finally, candidates are required to sit a one hour exam.
The breakdown of marks awarded for the various course elements is as follows:
(40%) - Skills demonstration
(40%) - Assignment
(20%) - Written exam
Course Content
From the subject matter presented over the initial 3 days, candidates should be able to:
Unit 1 - Fuel Poverty
Identify the factors contributing to fuel poverty. Compile a list of the different groups affected by fuel poverty. Summarise the outcomes associated with fuel poverty and illustrate how these are linked to other poverty issues in our society. Demonstrate the macro and micro benefits of addressing fuel poverty
Unit 2 - Legislation & Building Fabric
Summarise statutory requirements for insulation standards as specified in the building regulations. List the causes of heat loss. Explain functions of the regulatory organisations (e.g.Homebond). IIlustrate the impact of European Directives on energy consumption
Unit 3 - Domestic Heating Systems, Appliances and Hot Water Systems
State the systems / appliances available. Outline the principles on which they operate. Explain the common terms and associations with the systems/appliances
Demonstrate how to use them efficiently, appropriately and safely. Interpret suitable or different systems. Distinguish between the differing forms of condensation and dampness. Outline the causes of dampness and remedies for it
Unit 4 - Energy Consumption, Bills, Tariffs & Fuel Debt
Advise on appropriate energy efficient temperatures
Calculate comparative heating costs. Compare the cost of differing types of thermal insulation. Name the different ways to address fuel debt and advise on other assistance available. Deal competently with the application process for fuel debt. Communicate this information effectively.
