Windows security tips

Windows are an existing opening, and may be exploited by a burglar if not adequately secured. Most burglars are, however, extremely reluctant to break glass as this sound carries further than almost any other noise, and elicits a response from most people who hear it.

Some ideas how to protect your windows.

1. Check all windows to make sure they have locking devices and they work properly.

2. The best single protection for windows is glazing. Double and triple glazing is normally required for insulation, and it also accomplishes the same function of defense against simply breakage. Multiple layers of glazing are desirable.

3. Consider installing "stops" on windows to prevent them from being opened more than a pre-selected width, typically six or eight inches, which is adequate for ventilation but will not admit a human body.

Locks & Doors security tips

Locks and doors are your first line of home security; most burglars enter through an existing opening.

1. You have security with a lock only when you can account for every key.

2. Key-in-the knob locksets (this is a spring-latch system which is activated by a spring mechanism and is opened by inserting a key into the knob itself) offer virtually NO security, as the springs can be easily popped by exerting pressure in the right spot or the latch can be pried by the clever use of a knife blade or credit car. If your home is equipped with one, it should be replaced.

3. The most secure locks are double-cylinder deadbolts, which require a key to operate from either side.

4. The door should swing in to prevent any attack on the hinges;

5. If there is a mail slot in the door, the flap should be secured in place from the inside so that the opening cannot be used as a means through which the lock can be reached and manipulated.

6. A door-viewer should be installed. The viewer should be of the wide angle view variety so that it gives a good view of the area outside.

7. Door Chain or Limiter should be installed. They should be strong and located as far away from your letterbox as possible to prevent it being tampered with.

8. Security lights should be installed. A security light be located where it will provide most light. It is a good idea to locate one at both front and rear door.

9. Consider a home security system.

10. Look at your landscaping. Thorny bushes and climbing vines act as natural barbed wire near fences and windows. Trim shrubs to avoid obscuring windows.
