How A Silent Auction Works

1. The opening bid indicates minimum price of item.

2. Additional bids are entered on a bidding sheet.

3. The bidder enters a bid, including their name, company name (if applicable), and table number.

4. When the Silent Auction is closing, a final oppertunity wil be offered to make a "Final" bid, which must be in excess of the last bid on the bidding sheet.

5. You can obtain a bidding card for the item you desire from personnel in the room.

6. Comple the card and enclose in an envelope that will show the item number.

7. Seal the envelope and give it to the personnel.

Energy Action presents just one major fundraising activity each year...
The Gala Dinner and Auction 2004

From 1988 the Auction was a comparatively low-key event, comprising as it did a "Cheese and Wine" reception and an auction of artistic endeavours by politicians and other celebrities not normally associated with the visual arts. In 1998, to celebrate its 10th birthday, Energy Action upgraded the evening to a full Dinner and Auction, held in the prestigious Berkeley Court Hotel in Dublin, a move that proved to be extremely successful in both terms of finances raised and sociability.

The Gala Dinner is held as part of "National Energy Awareness Week", a week-long promotion of the concept of domestic energy conservation and awareness. This promotion is mounted and sponsored by Sustainable Energy Ireland, and in the years since its inception, the Energy Action Gala Dinner and Auction has become the social highlight of the Week.

In 1999 the Auction was opened to Internet bidders, and proved highly successful. The first item sold on the internet was a bottle of the finest rare Midleton Whiskey, sold to a bidder from the USA.

The Auction is wonderfully supported by many leading Irish Artistes, including Brigit Beemster, Brett McEntagart R.H.A., Peter Collis R.H.A., John Keating, Seamus Heaney and Kay Doyle, to name but a few. We learn with deep regret that Gerald Bruen R.H.A. passed away in August. Mr Bruen has been an enthusiastic donor of wonderful paintings to the Auction for many years, and our sympathies are extended to his wife Máine. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

But it is not only items from renowned artists that come under the hammer, as can be seen from the list. Our generous contributors come from a very broad spectrum of Irish Society - from poets and playwrights, musicians and sculptors, sports individuals and sports bodies, showbusiness personalities and politicians, in fact, a total cross-section of all that is good in out life. You will find something to suit every taste and pocketm from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Tables at the Dinner and Auction are always completely sold out, at a cost of 1,100 euro for ten people, and the event is supported by such prestigious Irish Companies and Government Agencies as the Electricity Supply Board (ESB), the national gas distribution company Bord Gais, the Department of Communications & Natural Resources, Sustainable Energy Ireland, Dublin City Council, Moya Doherty, Tyrone Productions, and many other companies in the private and public sector.
