INTERVIEW PREPARATION

  • Be clear on why you want the job and know as much as possible about the company
  • Know your CV well - usually the first question at an interview relates to your qualifications and experience to date. It would not impress any interviewer/s if you were unable to elaborate on what was in your CV
  • Be interested and enthusiastic about the job
  • Find out as much as possible about the company and job you have applied for
  • Be prepared. Try and think of possible questions you may be asked from your statements or from your CV
  • Presentation is important - you should be suitable dressed and groomed in your appearance - always dress in clothes you feel comfortable in and that make you feel good
  • Make sure your handshake is firm and you establish eye contact with the interviewer/s at the outset
  • Never lie about why you want the job - be positive about the reasons for your decisions; never be critical of any previous employment - it only serves to create a bad impression and make an employer wary of hiring you
  • Sometimes an employer will invite you in for a chat about the job - Don't be fooled into thinking this is just a casual get together
  • If asked about weaknesses resist the temptation to be too confessional about faults, turn weaknesses into strengths i.e. if you are not so good at some aspect of the job always say you have the ability to learn quickly and you have the skills to get the information
  • Show a sense of humour and feel free to laugh at appropriate times
  • Try to avoid asking questions about money, holidays time off etc. Hopefully, the employer will bring them up
  • On the day of the interview have clear directions and know how to reach interview venue
  • Arrive a little early
  • Bring with you a copy of your CV, certificates, references etc. in folder to interview
  • Be aware once you arrive at the premises all your actions, behaviour etc. may be observed
  • Let the receptionist know you have arrived

EXERCISE

Write down six points which you feel are important in preparing for interview - some of which may not be part of the above list.
